The United Nation’s second Sustainable Development Goal is Zero Hunger, with the aim to achieve this by 2030.
It is a huge issue that was heightened by the pandemic and can be caused by a number of factors.
How can we address an issue that is so complex?
That’s exactly what we discussed with Alex Sindorf in the latest episode of Igniting Change! Tune into the full episode below…
Alex has always been interested in what it means to eat well and has always cared about who has access to good food.
Before starting at Indy Hunger Network, Alex worked on the production side of food systems alongside farmers, community gardens, and production farms.
Although the work was fulfilling, she came back to the same questions – Who has access to eat good food, and how can more people have access?
This led Alex to the world of nonprofit work!
She has now been with Indy Hunger Network for almost 5 years, working to change systems and policies, as well as tackling food insecurity by encouraging collaboration between existing organizations.
About Indy Hunger Network
Indy Hunger Network (IHN) is a nonprofit organization based in Indianapolis that works to address food insecurity locally.
In Indianapolis alone, around 25% of the population is food insecure. The work Indy Hunger Network does aims to help people get the food that they need by strengthening the existing programs in the area and by addressing the underlying causes of food insecurity.
By researching the local food system, Indy Hunger Network can identify gaps and fill them through existing initiatives or new initiatives.
Community Compass is the main technology-related program that Indy Hunger Network works on.
It is a web and mobile app, available throughout Indiana, that was developed to fill the information gap that people had about the different programs that exist and how they are available.
Through the app, users are able to find food resources near them, such as local food pantries, soup kitchens, cooking classes, and more.
Community Compass also enables users to go through a screening process to find out what federal nutrition programs they are eligible for.
